On 6th April 2024 it will become the law that employers must offer working carers at least 1 weeks unpaid leave a year, to carry out their caring duties. This will be applied for in the same way as annual leave. The Carers Leave can be taken in half days or whole days, it doesn't have to be the whole week all at once.

Employers cannot refuse the request, however they can as the employee to postpone if they have a good business reason - however, if they do postpone they can only do so for 1 month.

Carers will be have to self-certify that they are in a caring role for someone who is disabled, suffering a long-term illness or needs care and support because of old age.

Every three minutes in the UK, someone develops dementia – and all too often, families struggle to know where to turn and are left feeling exhausted, overwhelmed and alone.

Because if you love someone living with dementia, you’re living with it too.

That’s the message behind Dementia UK's ‘I live with dementia’ campaign and why their specialist dementia nurses have put together our new ‘Living with dementia’ guide, which is designed to help you navigate the many changes and challenges of dementia.

‘Living with dementia’ is written by specialist nurses – who are known as Admiral Nurses – people living with the diagnosis and their family and friends, and is full of the information you need right now, whether your loved one is yet to get a formal diagnosis or is in the later stages of dementia.

You’ll find ‘need-to-know’ facts about the key issues that may be on your mind – from understanding changes in behaviour and living well with dementia to managing family dynamics and exploring care options.

One of the most difficult conversations you might have as a carer comes when your cared-for is so poorly that you and the doctors think it would be kinder not to resuscitate them if their heart were to suddenly stop beating. This is sometimes called a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) or DNAR (Do Not Attempt Resuscitation) order.

This is obviously a very tender conversation and sometimes it hasn't been handled as well as it might be, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. They are trying to fix this and learn lessons for future.

If you have experience of having a DNAR conversation with healthcare staff since March 2020, and feel up to discussing it with a researcher, Michaela Hubmann would like to speak to you. The interviews would take place over the phone or via Skype/Zoom as you prefer. Please email michaela.hubmann@manchester.ac.uk for further details.

They are a members-only supermarket who offer great value because they specialise in short dated and surplus stock, which also helps reduce food waste. To become a member you have to be on certain benefits, OR an employee/volunteer of selected organisations such as the NHS/charities/police.

The postcode for the Leicester branch is LE3 1UT - which is Wembley Road, between Glenfield and Leicester Forest East.

You can apply for Company Shop membership if you receive Carers Allowance and, following a phone call with our Carers Services Manager Kerry, the Leicester branch will also accept the Carers Passport as proof of carer status.

Full details of Company Shop and how to apply for membership are on their website
