Young carers from Leicestershire attend Nottingham University’s Young Carers Open Day

Date: Thursday, July 11th 2013
Categories: All Leicestershire Activities & Events Groups & Forums

Four of our young carers attended the first Open Day aimed specifically at young adult carers at Nottingham University on 27th June 2013, accompanied by Young Carers Project Worker Hannah Currington and Service Manager Pat Wilkins.

The brainchild of Professor Saul Becker of the School of Sociology and Social Policy, who was himself a young carer and has spent his academic career researching the issues they face, the Open Day gave 120 young carers from across the country the opportunity to see what university life is like.

After an introductory talk from various University staff and a (literally) explosive session called “Chemistry Live!”, the young carers were free to choose from a plethora of mini-lectures ranging from social work to philosophy, neuroscience to economics, as well as non-academic taster sessions such as archery, trampolining and Art in the Park. Of particular note was Inflativerse, an inflatable planetarium with an astronomy talk given by students. There was also a campus tour and an incredibly valuable talk on Higher Education finance.

We were well nourished throughout with a welcome breakfast (very welcome after setting off at 7.30am!) and complimentary lunch and snack vouchers.

Feedback from the young carers who attended was overwhelmingly positive and  it was an excellent, useful and inspirational day.

Professor Becker is conducting a survey into young adult carers (14-25) and the barriers they can face in accessing higher education. This is available at www.YACsurvey.com
